When we think of winter woolies, isn’t it really it’s hats that we think about first and foremost?
Hats for me evoke all those childhood reminders about losing all our heat through our heads!
They are the thing we grab as we rush out the door, and that unfortunately all too often get left behind and lost.
The only upside to this is that along with ‘needing’ a hat for every winter coat, ‘needing’ hats to take us from autumn to deep winter and through to spring, ‘needing’ to knit hats for everyone we know, losing hats is yet another reason to knit another hat!

Houndstooth Headband
The double layers of this two colour slipped stitch headband makes it the perfect stylish accessory for cold weather. The combination of on trend, vintage aesthetic with on trend, old fashioned practicality, makes it the headband you’ll return to year after year.
The incredibly simple, one colour at a time, slipped stitch pattern makes it perfect meditative or tv or queue knitting.
Combine a gradient, variegated yarn or even a parade of leftovers with a workhorse solid to striking effect.
The headband starts with a provisional cast on and is finished by using kitchener stitch to graft the live sts from the cast on to the final row of knit sts.
These are great skills to have and to learn, but if you do not feel comfortable with a provisional cast on or kitchener stitch grafting, you can cast on and off as usual and neatly sew the two ends of your knitting together.
Full, step by step, instructions for both the crochet provisional cast on and Kitchener Stitch graft are provided on the ‘Techniques’ page of the pattern.

Mimizan
Mimizan is a beanie worked in two colours of aran weight yarn.
The design was inspired by the large cones of the maritime pine trees in the forests around Mimizan in the Aquitaine region of France.
It uses a fun combination of slipped travelling stitches to create the zig zag effect and you are only ever using one colour at a time. The pattern provides full ‘stand alone’ written instructions for the stitch pattern and has been thoroughly tested for clarity.
It’s an interesting quick knit, ideal for gifts and in smaller sizes, ideal for using up left overs from other projects.

Bryanston
The Bryanston Beret is one of my earlier designs that has been reworked and is now available in 2 variations. The original 2 colour version (shown in khahi and burgundy) and a new ‘inside out’ (striped) version.
This second version is literally knitted inside out so the lovely texture pattern emerges on the ‘wrong side’ from the ribbing upwards and you just flip the hat the right way once you’re finished.
The stitch pattern creates a bouncy fabric which allows you to block it as a slouchy beanie or a beret/tam shape depending on which you prefer.
This beret allows you to showcase the great colours of hand dyed yarns alongside a solid or tonal main colour. You don’t need very much of these striking contrast yarns to make an impact with this design. As such it is perfect for leftovers of a favourite yarn.

Sarum
This hat was inspired by the Prisoners of Conscience stained glass window in Salisbury Cathedral’s Trinity Chapel, designed by Gabriel Loire of Chartres in the 1980s. This informs the lancet shapes, although here they are stacked, and my choice of colour; the stained glass is worked predominantly in striking blues which have an amazing luminosity.

Medium: to fit 19-21 inches, 48.5-53.5cm
Large: to fit 22-24 inches, 56-61 cm.

Contrast Yarn – 30g

Lang Jawoll Superwash Solid sock wool in Graphite Marl (50g = 230yds/210 m) as the main and

One hat in each size was made from a single ball of each.
