Despite the fact that few knits come closer to being a woollen hug, the delights of shawls appear largely under-appreciated by non-knitters.
As knitters we know the value of a good shawl and that they’re totally addictive to knit.
Shawls come in all shapes, sizes and knitting procresses so there’s always something for the knitter and the wearer.
Click on the headings below each shawl slideshow to see all the ‘drop down’ information you’ll need to choose the perfect shawl for you.

Kingston Lacy
This pattern is available for free exclusively from my blog during the month of February 2021, to mark my 10th anniversary of blogging.
Kingston Lacy is a broad triangular shawl knitted from the bottom tip upwards and it is finished with an applied garter stitch edge worked along the top to both stabilise the edge and match the garter stitch selvedge on the other two edges.
Using the reversible lace stitch used as an insert on my Badbury Shawl, creates a lovely all over lace pattern with great drape.
The all over stitch makes it both a meditative knit and flexible in terms of yarn weight and I’ve included instructions to work this pattern up in 100g of your choice of lace, 4ply/fingering or DK, making it perfect for shopping your stash.
This shawl is named after the Kingston Lacy estate of which Badbury Rings, after which my previously shawl was named, was a part.

FUBC 2
The FUBC 2 pattern was originally designed and released to mark the completion of my good friend Susan Crawford’s Cancer treatment, to honour the amazing women with whom she shared that journey, and to raise funds for the local Cancer Care charity that supported them through it.
Originally designed using Susan’s limited edition yarn, Ghyll, it would also be fabulous in Susan’s Hand dyed Bluem sock yarn or you could choose your favourite sock or sportweight yarn and make it truly your own.

Badbury
The Badbury shawl is offered in two gauges, one for 4 ply yarns and the other for sport weight. Following an ‘interesting’ game of yarn chicken on the first sport weight prototype, the pattern was re-knitted in 4 ply and worked fine with the extra yardage and smaller needles. However, I loved my Corriedale sport weight version which I was wearing daily by then so much, that I reworked the pattern so nobody else had to play chicken like I had. The result – 2 different but very similar patterns supplied as two separate pdfs.
The combination of the garter stitch and contrasts sections work up in such a way that the shawl is reversible and some people prefer the reverse side to the right side.
Size
4 ply version: Inner edge 72in / 183cm , outer edge 112.5in / 286cm, drop 15.5in / 39cm
Sportweight version: Inner edge 79 in/201cm , outer edge 130in/330cm, drop 17in/43cm

Anthriscus
Anthriscus is a ‘V’ shaped shawl knit from tip to tip, starting at one end and increasing to the centre, working contrast central section with short rows then working decreases in the third colour to the opposite tip. When worn wrapped around, the first and third colours overlap and the third colour is not visible. This means you can play with fun colour contrasts and include a colour that you like, but don’t want to wear close to your face.
Knitted in textured stitches on 5mm needles the Fenella yarn creates a lovely fabric with fabulous drape.

Common’s Drape
Launched on 2nd June 2015 to coincide with the 175th anniversary of Thomas Hardy’s birth at Higher Bockhampton in Dorset, This deep ‘V’ shaped shawl is knitted from the top down.
Starting with a garter tab, it then combines three different textured sections with contrasting garter stripes. Each textured section is easily mastered and being worked on a 4mm needle makes this a quick but interesting knit.
The ‘V’ shape is deep at the back and the sides wrap and sit nicely at the neck and to the front.
Common’s Drape takes it’s name from the Thomas Hardy poem ‘On a Heath’, which starts:
I could hear a gown-skirt rustling
Before I could see her shape,
Rustling through the heather
That wove the common’s drape,
On that evening of dark weather
When I hearkened, lips agape.

Hawserlaid
‘Laid’ is the traditional term for twist in rope and string construction and ‘hawser’ refers to the three strands, so a hawser-laid rope is a three-strand twisted rope. The 3×3 traveling or twisted rib stitch imitates the texture and appearance of heavy string or rope. You will see your knitting take on this characteristic more and more as you knit. You can then decide how much you want to block this out once you’re done.
This shawl/scarf is knitted sideways from tip to tip.

Mainline
Mainline is all about texture and shape. A simple textured edge to avoid curl, and a raised main stitch; the crescent shaped will hug you around the neck and shoulders.
It is knitted lengthwise from the bottom up which does mean a bit of a mammoth cast on, but if you use markers you can place them each repeat as you cast on, which helps you keep track and not have to count lots of stitches.
Once established, the main pattern is easy to follow from reading your knitting on both right and wrong side and the knitting speeds along. By the time you reach the first set of decreases you’re over half way through your project.
The pattern contains both written and charted instructions and the scarf comprises 18 repeats of the pattern section. You can easily add more sections if you want a longer/wider scarf.

Wraparound
This is a shawl originally designed for using up sock yarn leftovers. It’s a quick and easy knit using Knit, Purl and Yarn Overs to create the pattern, and an optional picot cast off which combines casting on and off to create a pretty edge.
The finished shawl is crescent shaped so will wrap around your shoulders in a hug and it tends to stay put without a shawl pin. It will also hang nicely at the front if you prefer.
First released in 2011, the shawl originally came one one size. The updated pattern (March 2019) has added medium and large sizes.

Lewth
’Lewth’ is Dorset dialect for ‘shelter’ or ‘warmth’ which can be found in the poetry of Thomas Hardy and/or William Barnes, who between them have probably done most to preserve the dialect I grew up hearing, but which is now rarely spoken.
Lewth is worked sideways from tip to tip increasing as you go to the mid point then decreasing.
The stitch pattern is a shifting 2 x 2 rib which works in one direction as you increase and the other as you decrease, this creates a ‘V’ shape in the stitch pattern which follows the line/shape of the shawl.
The tip to tip construction makes it ideal if you want to use up every last bit of yarn – weigh your yarn at the start, stop increasing when you’re half way through your yarn and then start decreasing.
The pattern is a simple 4 stitch 8 row repeat.
