‘Laid’ is the traditional term for twist in rope and string construction and ‘hawser’ refers to the three strands, so a hawser-laid rope is a three-strand twisted rope. The 3×3 traveling or twisted rib stitch imitates the texture and appearance of heavy string or rope. You will see your knitting take on this characteristic more and more as you knit. You can then decide how much you want to block this out once you’re done.
This shawl/scarf is knitted sideways from tip to tip.

3 skeins of Tern by Quince & Co(75% wool, 25% silk; 221yd [202m]/50g) – shown in Dusk

Gauge
42 sts and 35 rows = 4″ [10 cm] in spiral rib stitch pattern, before blocking
27 sts and 33 rows = 4″ [10 cm] in spiral rib stitch pattern, after blocking.

Needles & Materials
3.5mm (US4) or size required to achieve gauge
