Miscellany…

Not everything fits neatly into categories, unless that category is a catch all, and that’s what this ‘miscellany’ page is for.
Here you will find a range of whimsical, fun, sometime ‘kitsch’ items, often designed as fundraisers or gifts, some seasonal, some universal, most definitely a little bit of everything…

Ferla

The Ferla Box Bag was inspired by a desire to recreate my favourite bag, bought in Italy some years ago and now slightly past its best, in knitted form.
Ferla is knitted in one piece from the base up using a slip stitch pattern in two colours to produce a tweedy effect.

Sizes

7.5 x 3.5 x 9 inches/19 x 9 x 23 cm
Information is provided for resizing

Yarn & Gauge

The pattern suggests a bulky weight yarn worked to a gauge of 17 stitches and 31 rows to 10 cm x 10cm (4 x 4 inches) in pattern.
120m/131yds of main yarn
100m/110yds of contrast
You will need yarns of at least 12-16 ply (50m per 50g ball yarns), but can also knit this bag with multiple strands of finer yarn as shown in the photographed samples.
Yarn should be feltable wool as the bag is lightly fulled/felted after knitting. Superwash wools are not suitable for this project.
Information is provided on multi stranding yarns to make up a bulky weight wool.

Something to Declare

’Something to Declare’ evokes the customs declaration areas of major ports and airports.

These luggage labels were inspired by the vintage leather address labels I used when I first started travelling overseas many years ago. Fun accessories they can be used on handbags or nappy bags and you don’t have to stick to names and addresses but could use them to contain favourite quotes or positive affirmations. You could also use them on your knitting bag for knitting reminder notes.

The luggage tag is knitted from the button flap to the shaped tip, starting flat, then joining in the round, then casting off and knitting flat again before finally joining in the round again for the shaped end. The ends are Kitchener stitched together but you can cast off and sew up the end if you prefer.

The tag can be knitted plain, or using the colourwork charts provided. additional blank charts are provided for you to design your own colourwork patterns.

This pattern was originally released during the Winter Olympics in Sochi as a declaration of support for those oppressed as a result of their sexual orientation, both in Russia as the host country but also around the world in participating and non-participating nations.

Christmas Tree Ferrero Rocher Cosies

These trees are knitted from the bottom up. There are two designs and the pattern includes instructions to work them both flat and then seamed or in the round.

Tree one is knitted in smooth stocking stitch with ridges up the tree, these are shown knitted in contrast novelty yarn in the pictures.

Tree 2 is knitted in reverse stocking stitch broken up by two rows/rounds of stocking stitch – it is these two stocking st rows which are knitted in the contrast novelty yarn in the trees shown.

Either tree could be knitted entirely in novelty yarn once the base is completed. It is the base that contains the Ferrero Rocher and supports the weight of the tree so this is best knitted in regular yarn. The white tree pictured is an example of tree 2 knitted in eyelash yarn.

Sizes

Height
Tree 1 – 10cm/4 inches tall excluding bell
Tree 2 – 12cm/ 4 ½ inches tall excluding bell

Yarn & Gauge

These trees use just small amounts of DK weight yarn with a few meters of novelty yarn.

Needles & Materials

3.25mm (Old UK No.10), US3 needles for trunk/base
3.75mm (old UK No.9, US5) needles for tree
Bells or beads for decoration
Tapestry needle for sewing up and sewing in ends.
